Apple has put a hold on showing notification summaries for news and entertainment apps in the iOS 18.3 developer beta. This decision comes after users criticized the feature for inaccurately summarizing content from major news sources such as the BBC.
Currently, notification summaries, which are generated by Apple Intelligence, will not appear while Apple works on improvements. The company plans to reintroduce this feature in a future software update, once issues are resolved.
In the upcoming updates, Apple will clarify that the summary feature is still in the beta stage. Users will be informed that it may not be perfect and could contain errors. To give users control, Apple has made it easy to manage notifications for specific apps. Users can disable notification summaries directly from the lock screen or the Notification Center. By tapping on ‘Options,’ they can select ‘Turn Off Summaries’ to stop receiving these notifications.
To better distinguish between notification summaries and regular notifications, Apple will also use italicized text on the lock screen. This change aims to make it clearer for users which notifications are standard and which are summarized. Overall, these adjustments are part of Apple’s efforts to enhance user experience and address feedback from its community.
