Shou Zi Chew is a current chief executive officer of TikTok. He kicked off his career by doing an internship at Facebook, where he worked under one of the platform’s founders, Mark Zuckerberg.
Chew completed an economics degree at University College London and proceeded to earn an MBA from Harvard Business School. In 2015, he went on to work at the Chinese tech company Xiaomi where he played a significant role. By 2021, his journey took him to TikTok, where he became CEO.
In such a short time frame, TikTok has swept through social media and accumulated more than 150 Million Monthly Active Users in the States and over 1 billion users worldwide. The initial staggering growth of TikTok has made it the super glue connecting people and sharing content. Nevertheless, this success has not been without scrutiny, more so by Zuckerberg, who raised questions concerning TikTok’s effects on free speech in the world and possible national security risks..
In defense of the scorn perpetuated about TikTok, Shou Zi Chew actively champions this brand. For better user data privacy and safety, in Cheew’s opinion, that social media platforms were historically stronger allies than the alternative.
As the comparison on the possibility of banning TikTok gains momentum, Chew’s journey has unfolded from one den of challenges and competition to one that sharply focuses on ensuring actual user privacy and safety, the attention of which should be critical given that TikTok now hangs by a thread amid escalating tensions and scrutiny.
