Android phones can do a few things that iPhone users often assume are impossible on a smartphone. Some are hidden in settings, while others depend on the Android brand you use.
Run two apps at the same time
Android can split the screen so two apps stay open together. You can watch a YouTube video while replying to a message, or keep a calculator open while checking numbers in another app.
For example, imagine someone sends you a price in WhatsApp and you need to calculate the total. Instead of constantly switching between apps, split-screen lets both appear together.
Not every Android phone supports exactly the same multitasking features, but split-screen is common on many devices.
Turn your phone into a computer
Some Android phones can connect to a monitor, keyboard and mouse and provide a desktop-like experience.
Samsung’s DeX is the most recognizable example. With compatible hardware, the phone can display apps in resizable windows instead of looking like a normal phone screen.
Your smartphone can suddenly feel more like a small computer.
Install apps outside the Play Store
Android generally gives users more freedom to install apps from sources other than Google Play. This process is known as sideloading.
That can be useful when an app is unavailable in your region or you’re testing software from a developer.
There is an important catch: downloading random APK files can expose you to malware or modified apps. The freedom comes with more responsibility.
Use two copies of the same app
Some Android phones include a feature for cloning apps. You could potentially have separate copies of supported messaging or social apps for different accounts.
That can be handy for people who keep work and personal accounts separate.
Customize the phone much further
Android can let users change launchers, default apps, widgets, icon styles and other parts of the interface far beyond the standard setup.
So when someone says, “Android phones are all the same,” they are missing one of the platform’s biggest differences: you can often make the phone behave much more like your phone.
