5 Secret WhatsApp Features Most People Don’t Know About
You Use WhatsApp Every Day, But Probably Miss These 5 Features
1. Read a Message Without Showing the Blue Ticks
You don’t always want someone to know you’ve opened their message. WhatsApp’s read receipt setting lets you turn off blue ticks for normal one-to-one chats.
Go to Settings → Privacy → Read receipts and switch it off.
There is a tradeoff: you also won’t see read receipts from other people.
2. Lock Individual Chats
WhatsApp lets you move a private conversation behind your phone’s authentication, such as Face ID, fingerprint or another supported security method.
Open the chat, tap the contact’s name, and look for Chat Lock.
It’s useful when someone occasionally borrows your phone and you don’t want them casually opening a particular conversation.
3. Search Messages by Date
Looking for an old message can feel impossible when a chat contains thousands of conversations.
WhatsApp’s date-based search can help you jump closer to the exact day when a message was sent. In a chat, use search and select the calendar option when it is available.
For example, instead of scrolling through two years of messages, you can jump straight to the month or date you remember.
4. Keep Important Messages From Disappearing
Disappearing messages are useful for temporary conversations, but sometimes one message is worth keeping.
WhatsApp’s Keep in Chat option can allow certain messages to remain available instead of disappearing, depending on the chat’s settings and permissions.
5. Silence Calls From Unknown Numbers
Random WhatsApp calls can be annoying, especially when you don’t recognize the caller.
Under Settings → Privacy → Calls, WhatsApp provides an option to silence calls from unknown numbers. They won’t ring your phone normally, although the calls can still appear in your call list.
The interesting part about these features is that none requires a separate app. They’re already built into WhatsApp — they’re just easy to overlook.
