Reddit Is Turning Posts Into AI-Narrated Videos and Audio

The experiment comes as Reddit tries to keep users on its platform instead of letting other apps turn its conversations into entertainment.

Reddit is taking a format that has lived outside Reddit for years and pulling it into the app: AI-narrated versions of posts that users can listen to or watch.

The company began testing the experience with a limited group of English-language communities on August 17 for iOS and Android users. On the video version, an artificial voice reads a post and selected comments while Reddit displays the relevant text and visuals. A separate audio mode is aimed at people who want to keep up with threads without staring at their screen.

The idea is not new. During Reddit’s July 30 Q2 earnings call, CEO Steve Huffman said the company had noticed an emerging format elsewhere on the internet: people turning Reddit conversations into podcast-like content. Reddit’s move brings that behavior back to the platform.

That matters because Reddit is increasingly focused on direct usage. The company reported $805 million in Q2 revenue, up 61% year over year, while weekly active users reached 514.6 million. Huffman said direct app users are worth more to Reddit than search-referral visitors, reinforcing why keeping people inside Reddit matters.

There is also a creator question. Reddit has not announced a revenue-sharing plan for users whose posts are being narrated. So far, the company is testing the product, not a creator payout system.

One detail worth separating from the summary: Reddit’s positive video-comment engagement is a related but different feature. Video comments launched broadly in June, and Huffman said they were already more than 10% of video posts from that feature in Q2.

For now, “spoken Reddit” is an attention experiment. If users choose listening over reading, Reddit could turn years of text discussions into another consumption format without waiting for TikTok or YouTube to do it first.
