How to Hide Your IP Address for Better Online Privacy

Simple ways to protect your IP address and understand what hiding it actually does.

Your IP address is like a return address for your internet connection. Websites and online services can see it when you connect to them, and it can sometimes reveal your approximate location or internet provider.

One common way to hide it is by using a VPN (Virtual Private Network). Instead of websites seeing your normal public IP address, they see the VPN server’s IP.

Hide your IP on Android

The simplest method is a reputable VPN app.

  1. Install a trusted VPN from the Google Play Store.
  2. Open the app and create or sign into your account.
  3. Choose a server location.
  4. Tap Connect.
  5. Android will show a VPN indicator when the connection is active.

You can also check Android’s VPN settings under Settings → Network & internet → VPN, although the exact wording can vary between phones.

Hide your IP on iPhone

  1. Install a reputable VPN app from the App Store.
  2. Open it and sign in.
  3. Choose a server.
  4. Tap Connect.
  5. Allow the VPN configuration when iOS asks for permission.

If you use iCloud+, Apple also offers Private Relay, which can hide your IP from websites when browsing with Safari. It isn’t a replacement for a full-device VPN.

Hide your IP on a laptop

Whether you’re using Windows or macOS, the easiest option is again a VPN.

  1. Install a reputable VPN application.
  2. Sign in.
  3. Select a server.
  4. Click Connect.
  5. Leave it connected while using services where you want the VPN protection.

A VPN can help on public Wi-Fi, reduce exposure of your real IP address and add privacy when browsing.

However, hiding your IP doesn’t make you completely anonymous. Websites can still use cookies, account information, browser fingerprints and other signals to recognize you. A VPN also means you’re trusting the VPN provider with your connection.

For legitimate privacy and security, think of an IP-hiding tool as one layer of protection, not an invisibility button.
