Google Images Turns 25 With AI Image Generation and a Smarter Search Experience
Search Can Now Create Images Instead of Just Finding Them
Google has announced a major update to Google Images as the service marks its 25th anniversary, introducing AI-powered image generation and a redesigned interface aimed at making visual search more interactive. The rollout begins in the coming weeks for signed-in desktop users in English.
Search Is Becoming a Creative Tool
The biggest addition lets users generate images directly from Google Search prompts. Instead of only displaying images already published online, Google Images can now create original visuals using the Nano Banana 2 Lite model when users ask Search to visualize an idea.
This expands Google Images beyond indexing the web. It now serves both as a discovery platform and a creative tool, helping users produce illustrations, concept art, or mockups that may not exist anywhere online.
A New Homepage Focused on Discovery
Google is also replacing the familiar blank search page with a personalized image gallery that updates based on users’ interests. Saved images are easier to organize through dedicated tabs, creating an experience that feels closer to Pinterest than a traditional image search engine.
The redesign reflects Google’s broader strategy of keeping users engaged inside Search instead of sending them elsewhere for inspiration.
The update highlights how AI is reshaping search itself. Rather than simply retrieving information, Google’s products are increasingly generating content on demand. That places Google in more direct competition with AI-powered creative platforms while making visual creation available to millions through a familiar search box.
The success of the rollout will depend on whether users see AI-generated images as a helpful extension of search rather than a replacement for finding authentic content online.
