The Smartphone That Wins By Showing You Its Insides
Nothing built a phone brand on see-through backs and blinking lights. In 2026, it made an even bolder choice.
Most phones look the same. Take away the logo, and you can barely tell one brand from another. One company decided the answer was to stop hiding what’s inside the phone and make that the whole design.

Showing the wires instead of hiding them
Nothing builds phones with see-through backs. You can see the screws, the small circuit boards, and the wires that most brands hide behind plain glass or plastic. It also added the Glyph Interface, strips of light on the back that blink for calls or notifications, so you don’t always need to turn on the screen. Rather than hiding components behind colored glass, the manufacturers showcase custom-engineered circuit boards and screws.
Skipping the new flagship
This year, Nothing did something most phone makers avoid: it chose not to release a new top phone. Co-founder Carl Pei explained that Nothing is moving into a second phase of growth, and instead of following the industry’s yearly refresh cycle, the company wants each upgrade to feel meaningful, so the Phone 3 will stay its flagship through 2026. Instead, the company focused on a mid-range refresh, the Phone 4a, adding new colors and design touches. It even released the phone in pink for the first time, letting the color show through the visible screws and coils underneath.

This timing is not random. Nothing is also investing more in audio products, building on strong sales from its first headphones, while component and memory prices keep rising across the industry.
Skipping a flagship saves money right when parts cost more. But it also protects the brand’s real advantage: people don’t buy Nothing for the fastest chip. They buy it because it looks like nothing else on the shelf. If that keeps working, expect more phone makers to start copying looks, not just specs.
