X Launches X Money to Turn Social Media Into a Financial Platform

Premium subscribers can now send money and manage digital funds.

X has launched X Money, a new digital payment platform that allows eligible US Premium and Premium+ subscribers to store money, send peer-to-peer payments and manage a deposit account directly inside X.

More Than a Social Network

The service includes a digital wallet, a virtual payment card that works with Apple Wallet, cashback rewards and the possibility of higher annual percentage yields on qualifying deposits. Customer funds are held through Cross River Bank and are insured up to $250,000, while security features include passkey authentication and Visa’s transaction protections.

The launch represents one of the biggest milestones in Musk’s plan to transform X into an all-in-one platform where messaging, content, commerce and financial services exist in a single app.

A Crowded Fintech Market

X Money enters a market already dominated by services such as PayPal, Venmo, Cash App and Apple Cash. Instead of competing only on payments, X is betting that integrating financial tools with its social platform will encourage users to spend more time inside the app and eventually support creator payments, subscriptions and other digital transactions.

Questions Around Trust

The rollout has also attracted political attention. US Senator Elizabeth Warren has questioned whether X Money has sufficient consumer protections and whether its operations could introduce financial or national security risks.

Those concerns highlight the biggest challenge ahead. Building payment technology is only part of the task—earning public trust and satisfying regulators may determine whether X Money becomes a core feature of X or remains a niche service for subscribers.
