Your iPhone doesn’t need to run everything at full power all day. A few small changes can reduce background activity, screen power use and unnecessary connections.
1. Turn down your screen brightness
The display is one of the biggest power users on any smartphone. Lower the brightness when you don’t need a super-bright screen, and let automatic brightness handle most situations.
2. Use Dark Mode
On iPhones with OLED displays, Dark Mode can reduce power consumption because black pixels require less energy to display.
3. Check which apps are draining your battery
Go to Settings → Battery and look at your usage. If an app you barely use is consuming lots of power, investigate its background activity or consider removing it.
4. Limit Background App Refresh
Apps don’t always need to refresh when you’re not using them. Go to Settings → General → Background App Refresh and disable it for apps that don’t need constant updates.
5. Reduce unnecessary notifications
Every notification can wake the screen and trigger activity. Keep alerts for important apps and silence the ones that constantly interrupt you.
6. Turn off location access you don’t need
Location services can quietly work in the background. Check Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services and restrict apps that don’t genuinely need your location.
7. Use Low Power Mode when necessary
Low Power Mode reduces certain background activities and visual effects to stretch your remaining battery. It’s especially useful when you’re away from a charger.
8. Keep your iPhone cool
Extreme heat is bad for batteries. Don’t leave your iPhone baking in direct sunlight or trapped somewhere hot while charging.
9. Download content before travelling
Streaming video and music constantly uses network connections. Downloading content over Wi-Fi beforehand can reduce mobile-data and network activity while you’re out.
10. Don’t obsess over closing every app
Force-closing apps constantly isn’t a magic battery-saving trick. iOS manages background apps automatically, so focus on apps that actually show significant battery usage.
Think of your battery like a daily budget. You don’t need to eliminate everything enjoyable—you just want to stop wasting power on things you aren’t using.
