Argentina Wants AI to Run Companies. So What Happens to Human Workers?

Argentina's proposal could change how businesses are built, but it doesn't eliminate the need for people.

Argentina’s proposal to recognize AI-run companies sparked one big question online: if AI runs the business, what are humans expected to do? The proposal, championed by President Javier Milei, aims to create a legal category for companies largely operated by AI systems. However, the current draft still requires human oversight and legal responsibility, meaning people are not completely removed from the equation.

Imagine that self-checkout machines replace cashiers at the supermarket. Now one employee can look after ten machines instead of scanning groceries of one customer. The nature of work has changed but it certainly does not disappear.

Same thing will happen to the AI-controlled workplaces. If this technology masters accounting, customer service, scheduling, marketing, negotiations or any other tasks humans do for a living, the nature of work will transform into something else entirely. New positions will emerge to program, manage, audit, control or improve AI systems, handle legal issues and conflicts, ensure privacy or focus on areas requiring a human touch such as trust, understanding and empathy. These are the fields where businesses will need humans now more than ever before.

The proposal also exposes a difficult question: who is responsible when an AI-run company breaks the law or causes financial damage? That concern is exactly why the draft still includes human accountability instead of giving AI complete independence.

Rather than creating a world without workers, Argentina’s idea may be an early experiment in building companies where humans supervise intelligent software instead of performing every task themselves. Whether that creates new opportunities or fewer traditional jobs will depend less on AI itself and more on how governments, businesses, and workers adapt.
