Robots Are Now Going to School in China

30 humanoid robots and robotic dogs are learning from human teachers before entering the real workforce.

I never imagined a school where the students aren’t children but humanoid robots and robot dogs. Yet that’s exactly what has opened in Hangzhou, China. The first class includes about 30 robotic students preparing for jobs in factories, healthcare, security, entertainment, and public services.

They aren’t learning like humans

At first, I thought, “Why send a robot to school when you can just update its software?” The answer is surprisingly simple. Reading instructions isn’t the same as doing the job.

It’s similar to learning to ride a bicycle. Sure, watching someone else ride provides insight and inspiration, but nothing can rival the knowledge of what it feels like to be on the bike and keep balanced. When it comes to robots, they too have to learn how to handle themselves in chaotic environments such as the ones that humans deal with on a daily basis.

Human teachers can train robots by leading them through various tasks several times, enabling their artificial intelligence to acquire advanced reasoning, rather than simply obeying specific commands. Additionally, the school provides courses in technical specialties, healthcare, fine arts, and sports before conferring professional certificates to them.

What caught my attention

I don’t see this as replacing every worker overnight. I see China trying to create robots that can safely cooperate with humans instead of operating only inside controlled factory lines. Whether that vision succeeds depends on reliability, safety, cost, and public trust—problems no classroom alone can solve.
