WhatsApp Could Let Users Replace Their 6-Digit PIN With a Password
Alphanumeric passwords could replace the current six-digit PIN.
WhatsApp is working on an enhanced version of its two-step verification system that will allow users to set an alphanumeric password rather than a numeric 6-digit PIN. The feature was discovered as part of the latest WhatsApp Android beta (v2.23.6.8). As of the release date, the update is not yet available to beta testers.
If implemented, the new option will be optional and complement the current 6-digit PIN system. This suggests that users will have the option to choose between the two methods or use them in combination with each other.
Why WhatsApp Seeks to Introduce the Password
The 6-digit PIN has proven to be a reliable method to secure WhatsApp accounts. However, it has a limitation – there are only 1 million possible combinations. An alphanumeric password has much higher complexity and protects the account from being hacked.
WhatsApp recognizes the need to increase the level of security since the app is now used in all areas of human activity. In addition to private communication, users use WhatsApp to store and transfer various types of personal data: photographs of passports and other documents, banking details, and many others.
More robust encryption is a must, especially since there are many attacks on WhatsApp accounts via SIM card cloning.
Password as Part of a Larger Strategy
WhatsApp’s interest in implementing the alphanumeric password is part of a broader strategy to improve the security of the platform. Meta is also working on other features that will give WhatsApp users more control and privacy, such as the ability to use usernames instead of phone numbers for communication and new shortcuts for the microphone during voice calls.
It is not yet known when the feature will become available to all users since it may undergo further development before being offered to beta testers. However, the very fact of its development demonstrates that WhatsApp will continue to pursue a policy of continuous improvement and provide users with more options for securing their accounts.
