Apple and Google Face Legal Pressure to Remove AI Nudify Apps From Their App Stores

Pressure is growing on app stores to strengthen AI content moderation.

San Francisco City Attorney David Chiu has ordered Apple and Google to remove 13 AI-powered nudify apps from their app stores, arguing that they help create nonconsensual intimate images and violate consumer protection laws. The legal action expands Chiu’s campaign against businesses that distribute deepfake technology capable of producing explicit fake photos.

Child Safety Concerns Intensify

The pressure comes after a report found that some nudification apps carried an “E for Everyone” rating, making them easily accessible to younger users. Critics argue that these ratings fail to reflect the risks associated with AI tools capable of generating sexually explicit content from ordinary photographs.

The problem is not limited to those who are famous and popular personalities. A certain number of people who only seem in one of the social media platforms can be a target for such AI utilization, and it should be remembered that the issue concerns both of its potential positive and negative aspects.

App Stores Face Growing Responsibility

Apple informs that it is constantly monitoring apps and removing those which violate its safety policies from the App Store, such as those containing sexual content. Google reiterated its own policy banning such material, adding that it has already taken down hundreds of similar applications from Google Play.

The scenario presented in the case is part of a growing trend in which regulators are shifting from focusing on developers alone towards holding digital markets accountable for the emergence of unacceptable AI service within their platforms. As such, as the generative AI market grows, application stores are likely to be challenged and scrutinized more intensely for their roles in facilitating such developments which put the public at risk.
