The Real Reason Apple Increased The Prices Of Their Devices
The race to build AI is changing the cost of phones, laptops, and tablets.
Apple’s recent price increases aren’t just about inflation or new features. One of the biggest reasons is the growing demand for memory chips driven by the AI industry.
Every AI server needs huge amounts of high-speed memory and storage to train and run large AI models. A single server can use more memory than hundreds of laptops. Now imagine millions of those servers being built by companies investing heavily in AI. The demand is enormous.
Samsung, SK hynix, and Micron, the big three memory makers, simply don’t have infinite capacity. AI companies also buy a lot, and pay top dollar, so suppliers obviously service those customers first. This also means less chip supply for MacBooks, iPads, gaming computers, and iPhones, which can also raise their prices.
Think of it like a bakery with one oven. If a restaurant suddenly orders thousands of loaves every day, there will be fewer left for regular customers, and the price of bread is likely to rise.
Apple has reportedly absorbed some of these higher costs for a while, but eventually passed part of the increase on to customers. iPhones have largely avoided price hikes so far, though that may not last if memory shortages continue.
Even if you never use AI, the AI boom could still make your next gadget cost more. That’s becoming one of the unexpected side effects of the global AI race.
