AI can help you write articles, emails, social media posts, and even school assignments in minutes. The problem is that its writing can sometimes sound too perfect, with predictable phrases, repetitive explanations, and paragraphs that lack personality.
The solution isn’t to stop using AI. It’s to stop letting AI do all the thinking for you.
1. Give AI Your Own Ideas First
One reason AI-generated content feels generic is that people often give it generic instructions.
Instead of typing, “Write an article about phone battery tips,” explain what you want readers to learn, who the audience is, and what makes your angle different.
For example, you could ask ChatGPT to explain why a phone battery drains quickly when someone uses TikTok for hours, using simple English for beginners.
The more specific your instructions, the more useful the result can become.
2. Stop Copying the First Draft
Treat AI’s first response as a starting point, not a finished article.
Read every paragraph and ask yourself: Would I actually say this? Is this useful, or is it just taking up space? Can I explain this more simply?
Delete unnecessary sentences, replace awkward phrases, and change sections that don’t match your personality.
You don’t need to rewrite everything. Sometimes, a few thoughtful edits make a noticeable difference.
3. Add Experiences AI Cannot Know
AI can explain how to use an app, but it cannot automatically know what happened when you personally tested it.
If you’re writing a technology review, try the product yourself. Include what worked, what frustrated you, and what a beginner might struggle with.
Never invent personal experiences just to make an article sound authentic. If you haven’t tested something, explain it honestly.
4. Avoid the Same AI Phrases
Watch for repeated expressions such as “In today’s digital world,” “Here’s the thing,” and “It’s important to note.”
These phrases aren’t always wrong, but using them repeatedly can make different articles sound as if they came from the same template.
Choose words you would naturally use when explaining something to a friend.
5. Use AI as an Editor, Not Your Personality
You can ask AI to improve grammar, organize ideas, identify confusing explanations, or suggest stronger headlines without asking it to rewrite everything.
Try this prompt:
“Review my writing for grammar and clarity. Keep my original voice, sentence style, opinions, and examples. Don’t make everything sound overly polished. Only suggest changes that genuinely improve the writing.”
The Goal Is Better Writing, Not Perfect Writing
Natural writing doesn’t mean adding spelling mistakes or deliberately making sentences messy. It means communicating clearly while allowing your own perspective to come through.
AI should help you express your ideas more effectively, not replace the ideas that make your writing yours.
