Samsung Reportedly Developing a Rollable Smartphone Called the Z Slide for 2028

Samsung's foldable success is opening the door to a new display experiment

Samsung reportedly continues development of its rollable smartphone dubbed Z Slide. The device is said to sport an expandable 10-inch 16:9 display that packs 440.6 ppi pixels density.

This latest development comes to prove that Samsung still has a big vision for how smartphones should evolve beyond what it currently has to offer with the Z Fold and Z Flip lines, which has made the company a pioneer of foldable form factors.

The Advantages Of Rollable Phones

Foldable smartphones are an attempt to give us a bigger screen by turning a phone into another bigger display, but on the flip side, they make phones thicker, introduce creases on the display and mechanically complicated components.

The idea of a rollable screen looks like a completely different approach that still works to offer us an expanded view without folds, thanks to a screen that rolls out of the main device. For the consumer, it can mean carrying a standard smartphone form factor device that can transform into something bigger (almost tablet-like) that would be excellent for streaming videos, reading books or playing games and multitasking.

The Big Problem Samsung Needs To Address

This idea is not new. In the past, several other manufacturers have unveiled their own prototypes for rollable smartphones, andLG had also explored something similar prior to exiting the smartphone market. So far, no one has managed to present a rollable smartphone that is able to withstand long-term use with years of everyday wear-and-tear without issues, as well as keep the smartphone compact, inexpensive, and reliable.

Samsung, on the other hand, has a major edge here given their strong background in flexible OLED panel technology and their know-how with manufacturing foldable devices.

Long-Term Product

If the reports prove true and a Samsung Z Slide will launch by the end of this decade (some sources estimate it for 2030), this could be a sign that Samsung has set sights on rollable form factor as a viable product line rather than a single experimental venture.

It’s not guaranteed whether another new type of smartphone form factor will catch the attention of consumers. However, with Samsung continuing to invest in the technology, it does seem they’re betting the future of the smartphones has more room to grow-literally.
