Your ChatGPT Prompts Are Using Enough Power to Run a Small City
Every prompt feels instant, but billions of them rely on an enormous network of computers running around the clock.
One ChatGPT prompt feels almost free. Ask ChatGPT a question and a response will be returned in seconds with the simple act of you hitting a keyboard and Enter. But underneath the hood are thousands of robust machines inside data centers that churn together to interpret your question and to formulate the answer. OpenAI has reported that the ChatGPT system now handles about 2.5 billion prompts per day.
If each of those prompts demands an average of about 0.34-watt hour, then those 2.5 billion prompts demand about 850 megawatt hours of electricity daily, or enough to supply electricity for a small town for a day, depending on local power demands.
As with rice: One grain is next to weightless. A whole truck load of millions of grains is exceptionally weighty. Your use of just one AI query barely register, but millions of queries make an impact in demand for electricity. More of that electricity is not at your cellphone or on the device that you might be reading this on.
But rather its within big, data centers that run many hundreds, or thousands, of computers filled with chips optimized to do AI work and also keep it cool.
However, all this shouldn’t stop you using the technology. This calculation shows just how digital routines multiply. The growing integration of AI into work, coding and daily routines is driving a competition among companies to discover new more efficient computer hardware and greener sources of electricity that won’t come at a great cost to the planet as demand for artificial intelligence rises.
