Your Phone Is Getting Slow? Do These 6 Things First

Six quick things you can do when your phone suddenly becomes hot, sluggish, or painfully slow.

A slow, hot phone usually needs a break before it needs a factory reset. If your screen is lagging, apps are taking forever to open, or the phone feels unusually warm, try these six things first.

1. Close the app that’s working your phone hard

Open your recent apps and close anything you’re not using, especially games, video editors, navigation apps, or camera apps.

If one app is stuck or behaving badly, closing and reopening it can immediately reduce the workload.

2. Stop charging for a few minutes

If the phone is hot while charging, unplug it temporarily and let it sit somewhere cool.

Don’t put it in a refrigerator or freezer. Sudden temperature changes and condensation can cause problems. Just remove the case if it’s trapping heat and leave the phone alone for a few minutes.

3. Turn off things you don’t need right now

Quickly disable features you’re not using, such as:

  • Mobile hotspot
  • Bluetooth
  • GPS/location
  • NFC
  • 5G, if your phone allows you to switch to another network mode

You don’t need to keep everything running just because your phone can.

4. Restart the phone

This is still one of the easiest fixes.

A restart stops running processes and gives the operating system a clean start. Think of it like closing every tab on your desk and reopening only the ones you actually need.

5. Give storage some breathing room

A phone that’s nearly full can become frustrating to use. Delete large videos, duplicate photos, downloaded files, and apps you haven’t touched in months.

Start with your Downloads folder and messaging-app media. Those can quietly become storage monsters.

6. Let it cool before using it heavily

If the phone is noticeably hot, stop gaming, recording video, or running demanding apps for a while.

Heat can cause phones to reduce performance to protect their internal components. So if your phone feels like a tiny hand warmer, pushing it harder is probably the opposite of what you want.

If it keeps overheating or slowing down even when you’re barely using it, the problem may be more serious than temporary app overload. That’s when checking battery health, problematic apps, or getting the phone inspected makes more sense.
